Tuscany - My Lover And I
Today, it's an incredible example of the period's architectural engineering. Tuscany is not all charming hill towns and rolling hills. It also has about miles of coastline. You've got the wild and romantic area known as the Maremma and the glitzy Forte di Marmi. And then there is Viareggio, a lively beach town with Liberty-style architecture and white sand beaches.
Visit the historic Caffe Margherita on the 'lungomare,' rent bikes to explore the nearby pine forest, or rent a beach chair and umbrella and spend the day sunbathing.

It is evocative of a place and way I would so dearly love to live. It isn't as smooth as some memoirs I've read, but the writing is beautifully lyrical.

I know that, in order to do the things this couple did, one needs a certain amount of money, and I'm never bothered by that. But it did eventually get annoying that he made repeated references to the poor house, and then in the very next section was off on yet another incredible vacation or buying another crazy-expensive thing for his new estate. I'm cool with that, just don't keep talking about the poor house when you are obviously nowhere near destitute. But that's just one small complaint about an otherwise truly enjoyable read.
I longed for pictures! However I found some online, since this is a story about the building of an estate and winery that now produces world-class wines. One person found this helpful. If you are ready for a light-hearted book about life in Tuscany, then you will enjoy this book. While it won't provide you with the in-depth cultural descriptions provided by books such as those written by Mayes or Dusi, it will provide you with many laugh-out-loud moments.
Some others who have reviewed this book have made reference to Mate's obvious wealth. He does indeed appear to be independently wealthy, but that doesn't take any fun away from reading about his experiences.
His personal wealth is obviously what made remodeling a friary and starting a vineyard possible in the first place. I enjoyed Mate's first book, but I loved this second book. In it, he really came into his own as a writer of the light-hearted travel memoir. These people have pockets so deep they not only rebuilt this ancient compound from the ground up, with the restoration impeccable in every detail, yet they still took time out for sailing in along British Columbia and skiing in the Dolomites It isn't a do-it-yourself story many of us could emulate!
Similar to I don't have the book at hand so I can't quote accurately: Ferenc Mate is living my dream and has written a warm and compelling account of what he had to do to get started in the wine production market. I enjoyed the book thoroughly and have recommended it to many of my friends. Great book for winelovers.

Shows what happens when you try to start a winery in a fun way. I read the "criticisms" on this board and do not share them. This was not intended as a treatise on vine growing and wine making but a deeply personal account of one family's quest for achieving a dream -- told with wonderful writing style, transporting the reader into the magical and unique world of discovery, illumination, and appreciation of one of God's gifts -- Tuscany.

Try to imagine yourself getting "tips" from Gaja; rubbing elbows in the rich soil of this region with the Conterno's and Banfi's; re-discovering the special beauties that the Etruscans built and the centuries hid from plain sight. This book is not a "how-to" dissertation; rather, it is a nearly mystical rendition of unearthing literally a treasure nearly lost to us, and a saga full of fun.
