Despite this strength, the text is uneven.

Certain chapters present copious new ideas and interpretations about masks. For instance, Chapter 7, which explores the numerous occasions when Venetians wore masks, is full of astonishing information masked Venetian nobles greeted traveling masked heads of state with masked entourages [50]— how bizarre! Other chapters, however, cover age-old general knowledge about the history of Venice that in no way merits repetition. Indeed, Part I the first six chapters discusses Venetian Carnival and Casanova in a way that offers little that is new and, oddly, little about masks.

The unevenness of the book could stem from changing tides in publishing and a desire to reach scholarly and general audiences simultaneously—a goal that is not easy to achieve. Academic historians of Venice, for instance, will find Chapter 18—Johnson's discussion of Bakhtin, Davis, and the idea that Carnival functioned as a political "safety-valve"—extremely dated, whereas a general audience might have no interest whatsoever in such literary and anthropological theories.

Nevertheless, its better chapters are genuinely strong, providing food for further thought about the deeper meanings of the Venetian use of masks. See Mikhail Bakhtin trans. But Bound in Venice, which focuses on the city as a hugely important center of printing during the Renaissance, added immensely to my knowledge and expanded my understanding.

Extremely informative and detailed, it is at the same time, a popular book written for a broad audience, and so, too, an easy and lively read. Thanks to the deeply informed Venetian friend who liked it so much in Italian that she recommended the book to me in English. One person found this helpful.

It transports the reader back several centuries as a visitor to the Serene Republic, experiencing for the first time the excitement and innovation of this phenomenally leading edge culture. A fascinating journey into the history of publishing through the streets of Venice. Kindle Edition Verified Purchase. A fascinating study of the book publishing and selling industry as developed in Venice.

A good read for anyone curious about books and the people, mostly Jewish, who created the publishing world in Venice.

Venice and Its Lagoon

I enjoyed the book The Serene Republic and Interesting history of printing and publishing when Venice was the center of both and distribution from the fifteenth through eighteenth century, though diminished slightly through the Inquisition. This covered a period in history from the perspective of the Serene Republic, when it was a major power in the world Knowledge is power and knowledge was disseminated through the publishing world of Venice for centuries. The accomplishments of the Venetian printing houses was truly amazing considering both the cost and efforts involved, I was impressed to discover the impact of these entrepreneurs, and the creativity unleashed by the cosmopolitan make up of this city, that harbored communities of the diaspora of nearly every nation who were given refuge and opportunity in Venice and its environs.

I really would like to give this book a higher rating but the horrible editing and proofreading won't allow it. Incomplete sentences, random characters, very odd punctuation, and often amusing typos "untied" for "united" riddle the text.

Samenvatting

As another reviewer says, it's ironic that a book celebrating books and printing and language should have so many errors. Still, I learned a lot from it and expect that I'll pursue the topic by reading one or more of the author's often-cited biographies and histories.

If you love literature and books you must read this one.
